Common questions about membership.

Is membership really free? What's the catch?

Yes, membership is free and always will be. We don't accept government, corporate, or political party funding, and we don't charge fees. The organization is supported by volunteer time and small individual donations.

The "catch" — if it is one — is that we ask members to publish their work openly. If you join a working group, expect to put your name on briefs and explainers. We don't have a paywall on advocacy.

How much time does this actually require?

The minimum commitment is roughly 4 hours per month — enough to participate in one working group meeting and contribute to a small piece of work. Active members typically commit 8–12 hours per month.

You set the pace. We don't expect anyone to put public-interest work above their day job or studies.

Can I join if I'm still in law school?

Yes — the Student track is one of our three intake categories and our largest by membership. Roughly 40% of LGP members are currently in law school. Each student is paired with a senior member as mentor.

I'm not a lawyer. Can I still contribute?

Yes. The Allied Advocate track is open to researchers, journalists, technologists, policy professionals, organizers, and anyone whose work intersects with the legal-public interest space.

Several of our most-cited publications were co-authored with technologists and journalists. Plain-language explainers especially benefit from non-lawyer perspectives.

Are there geographic or chapter requirements?

We have active working groups in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, with members in 12 cities across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Most work happens remotely — there's no requirement to attend in-person meetings to participate.

What happens after I apply?

Applications are reviewed monthly. If your background fits a current working group, the Membership & Community team will reach out for a brief 20-minute intro call to discuss fit. Approved members onboard with the current quarterly cohort.

End-to-end, the process takes 2–6 weeks depending on cohort timing.
